News Team Coordinator (Washington Spark Newspaper-District of Columbia)
5-8 flexible hours/week for each coordinator, mostly online
This is a very light managerial role that provides an excellent way to get experience managing as well as a great resume builder (since you will be listed online and in the masthead as one of the coordinators). You may also pick up or hone skills related to journalism and news production work.
The Washington Spark is a relatively new newspaper that distributes 25,000 copies all over Washington DC. However, we don’t have a central office. Instead, we have virtual “assembly line” workflow that uses different teams to develop the content.
1. Writers --> Column Editors --> Copy Editors --> Fact-Checkers --> Legal Reviewers --> Layout Designers
2. Photographers --> Column Editors --> Photo Editors--> Layout Designers
3. Advertisers --> Ad Designers --> Layout Designers
Each team works on a different list-serve and each needs a coordinator to support the team members and keep the content moving along the “assembly line.” The coordinator helps move various kinds of content (articles, photos, or ads) from one group to another and makes sure that a person in your group is assigned to process each item. For example the Copy Editing Coordinator makes sure that an incoming article is assigned a copy editor, and once it is done, and checked, makes sure that it gets sent to the next group (fact checkers). The coordinator also responds to comments, suggestions, questions, from the team-members.
Basically, each Coordinator does the following:
1. Uses a simple excel spreadsheet to keep track of the status of content (articles or photos or ads) and assigns them to team members. 2. After the team member works on the content, the coordinator does a simple quality check to make sure content meets the quality standard. 3. Checks into the internet at least once a day to keep the content items moving. 4. Uses the team’s list-serve to keep the team plugged in (invites new people and gets them situated, supervises keeps team members informed of any important developments). 5. Works with the other coordinators via a coordinators’ list-serve to discuss any problems and/ or implement any potential improvements.
You do not need prior newspaper or journalism experience but it``s a definite plus. Depending on the team you are working with, there may be a few particular skills we will teach you (e.g. if you work with photos we’ll teach you how to determine the resolution of a photo that is sent to you).
Requirements: 1. supports the mission and project of the newspaper (www.washingtonspark.org) 2. must have good internet access 3. must keep newspaper information (stories, personal contact information, in-house procedures) confidential
4. works well with volunteers, e.g., is considerate and supportive 5. must be good at web communication (responsive, and can write clear and prompt emails) 6. must have basic management skills
TO APPLY: please contact markgjcimino@yahoo.com and indicate your interests and abilities (or send a resume)

TRAVEL WRITERS--GET ONBOARD!
iTravelSyndicate is an online marketplace for travel content that allows editors of newspapers, magazines, Web sites and publishing companies to purchase nonexclusive reprints rights for articles written by travel writers worldwide.
iTravelSyndicate was designed to help you, the travel writer, by enabling you to maximize the value of your travel content. Writers simply register with iTravelSyndicate, submit their previously published travel articles, and set the syndication price. iTravelSyndicate’s more than 1,000 registered editors then shop for content and purchase nonexclusive reprint rights for articles they want to publish.
What makes iTravelSyndicate different from traditional syndicates? That’s simple: We’re a traditional syndicate gone digital — and we’re more generous, too. While a traditional syndicate pays writers 40% to 50% of the syndication price, we offer a generous 60%. (We even let you set the price!) There is a $39 per year syndicate fee due at signup. Bottom line is: We only make money when you make money — that is, when editors purchase nonexclusive reprint rights for your article(s).
So let us help you. After all, you’re a travel writer — not a salesperson. That’s why you should be writing. Let us handle the selling. We’re here to empower travel writers.
