Writing Tip: If Only Writers Put the Word “Only” Only Where It Should Go
by: Lisa Silverman
"Susan only submitted her manuscript to three literary agencies."
"Susan submitted her manuscript to only three literary agencies."
Ever hear of a “misplaced modifier”? Don’t worry, I’ll get into those in another article. Today I’m going to briefly explain one example, a pet peeve of mine and of copyeditors everywhere: the use and misuse of the word “only.” This is one of those grammatical rules that most people (including yours truly) don’t follow in speech or in informal writing, and therefore needs editing in every single manuscript that comes across my desk, even those by the most experienced authors. “Too picky,” you might say--but remember: book writing isn’t speech. Being “picky” means being a professional.
The sentences above, if you spoke them out loud, might have the same meaning to your ear. But a closer look on the page reveals that their meanings are different. The most important thing to keep in mind when writing—after, you know, stuff like spelling words correctly--is to never to confuse a reader. This doesn’t mean never intentionally mislead the reader of your mystery novel or leave ambiguous the ending of your thriller. It means that the meaning you are trying to convey is never in question, not in any single sentence. If it is, readers become distracted, and you’ve lost them.
The first sentence in my example does not convey its intended meaning. Why? Because “only” is next to “submitted,” which is not the word it is modifying. As written, the sentence tells us that Susan did nothing but submit her manuscript to three literary agencies. She didn’t submit it to publishers. She didn’t enter it into writing contests. She didn’t have it bound and engraved. (Don’t do that, by the way, if you’re planning to send it to anyone.) In fact, if we’re being really strict, she didn’t do anything else at all. She didn’t even get out of bed and brush her teeth this morning. She “only submitted.”
Now look at the second sentence. Aha! Now you get it. Susan submitted to “only three” literary agencies. This construction leaves no room for doubt. And it emphasizes more strongly the sentence’s significance: that she didn’t submit her manuscript to very many agencies. This simple rearrangement of words eliminates ambiguity and improves clarity and specificity--so why not go through your manuscript right now, do a global search for the word “only,” and make sure it’s used properly?
The proper placement of the word is not always this clear-cut, and there may be instances where moving it makes your sentence read awkwardly. As always, use your judgment and tailor this tip to your own work. But if you ever see that clarity is in doubt, this is an easy way to eliminate that doubt and make your writing that much more professional.

Writing Tip: Why Nouns and Verbs Are Your Friends
by: Lisa Silverman
"The wearily handsome, nervous, stubble-chinned man slowly and carefully got out of bed when he heard the soft, mysterious sound of footsteps in his apartment."
OR
"The ex-con bolted up, rubbed his eyes and then the stubble on his chin, and crept out of bed. Those footsteps didn’t belong in his apartment."
Look at the above sentences, and see if you can figure out why the second example is better written than the first. If you still don’t know, look above that. At the risk of stating the obvious: nouns and verbs are the backbone of any sentence, and thus of all writing. I could have made my title really long and added “. . . and Adjectives and Adverbs Are Your Enemies,” but I like to keep it short.
It’s not only about eliminating adjectives and adverbs so that your writing contains few words that aren’t nouns and verbs. After all, if we did that to the first example, we’d be left with:
"The man got out of bed when he heard the sound of footsteps in his apartment."
Not very exciting, is it? That’s why it’s important to focus your writing not only on nouns and verbs, but on interesting nouns and verbs. I began my second example with “The ex-con,” but of course, I’m inventing a sentence that has no manuscript surrounding it--no context. If we’ve already met the character, use his name or a more descriptive noun such as mine. If you’re introducing a new character, use the best noun possible. “The businessman” would evoke a completely different image in your readers’ minds, and it would be a stronger image than “The blond, well-groomed, middle-aged man.”
Why is one noun stronger than three adjectives (and one verb stronger than three adverbs)? Sure, we can picture a guy who’s blond, well-groomed, and middle-aged, and we might guess from that description that he’s a businessman. We can picture a “wearily handsome, nervous, stubble-chinned man” and perhaps guess that he’s an ex-con. But using the noun rather than a string of adjectives accomplishes two important things: First, it adds action to the character’s description. “Ex-con” not only calls forth a set of physical attributes, but also, by definition, tells you something about the guy’s life outside of this moment: he’s trying to recover from his time in the slammer and go straight. A “businessman” probably looks a certain way, and presumably spends his days doing business.
Then again, maybe the guy isn’t trying to go straight. Maybe he wants to return to a life of crime. Which brings me to the second advantage: involving the reader’s mind in the storytelling. If you string together a list of adjectives, you’re feeding a character to your readers without allowing them to draw their own pictures. Part of the fun--and the fascination--of fiction is the fact that everyone who turns the final page of a book has read a different one. And the more you allow people to be cocreators of your characters, your settings, etc., the more enveloped in your novel’s fictional world they will become.
Or in your nonfiction book’s world--nonfiction writers must leave less to the reader’s imagination, but editing using this principle will make nonfiction stronger as well. As with any other tips, customize it to your writing. It’s also, as I mentioned, about brevity. I don’t need to explain why “crept out of bed” beats “slowly and carefully got out of bed.”
Of course, adjectives and adverbs have their places. Otherwise languages wouldn’t contain so many. You might even find a few in this article (only a few). Again, customize this editing technique to your writing. Read a few pages and see if you find yourself using dull nouns such as “man” or “thing” a lot--chances are they’re surrounded by adjectives. If not, the potential book sitting in front of you may be dull indeed. Don’t go crazy with your thesaurus looking for obscure nouns to replace “man,” but do use this technique as a way to vary word choice. And, if you don’t have a thesaurus, for god’s sake, get one. The thesaurus in Microsoft Word, or anywhere online, won’t hold a candle to the old-fashioned bound kind.
Replace adjectives with more interesting, descriptive nouns, and watch your writing become streamlined, subtly evocative, laced with intrigue, varied in word choice… Oops, those are all adjective phrases. Just think of this noun: “bestseller.”

#Daily Writing Tip :

------------------------
Sowing the Seeds of Opportunity: How to Multiply Your Freelance (Writing) Work
by: Brian Konradt
You can turn your $200 fee to write a press release into $2,000 to carry out an entire PR campaign simply by convincing clients to invest in campaigns, instead of individual assignments. Campaigns achieve better results and cost less in the long-term for clients, compared to individual assignments. And, of course, as the freelancer, you get paid much more for turning out a succession of assignments that assimilate a successful campaign.
Here's how to multiply your writing sales by convincing clients to invest in long-term campaigns, instead of short-term individual assignments.
• Know the short-term and long-term view results. A client approaches you to write a brochure. He may or may not know that his product can also benefit from other types of promotional pieces, such as ads, direct mail, news releases, websites, and so on, to sell his product or service. Your job is to educate the client. The brochure may be the first promotional piece in a consortium of promotional pieces. Here, you must know the short-term and long-term view results of the brochure.
The short-term view results are the results the brochure will achieve for the client; and the long-term results are the results the brochure will achieve/contribute for the entire campaign. It answers the questions, "How do the results of this brochure fit into the entire campaign?" and "How can these results be strengthened with other forms of promotional materials?"
Show the client how a campaign that's comprised of a succession of assignments can achieve — and exceed — his expectations and outsell and outdo the performance of a single assignment.
• Use "tie-in" services. Whenever a client approaches you with a single assignment, ask yourself what tie-in services can supplement the single assignment. A news release achieves better results when it's accompanied with a photo. And a press kit — complete with press releases, photos, brochures, and company information — can achieve better results than a single press release. All of these extra tie-in services can turn writing a single press release into multiple writing sales.
• Offer the "concept to completion" benefit. Instead of pitching yourself as a freelancer who can write newsletter copy, pitch yourself as a freelancer who produces newsletters, from copy to completion. You multiply your income by outsourcing parts of the job and delivering a finished product, not a piece of the product. You also can extend your "concept to completion" services by pitching yourself as a marketing consultant, in which you make recommendations to the client as to the best way to market the newsletter.
• Develop strong consultative skills. Besides selling your freelance services, also offer consulting services. Clients pay you to explain ideas, concepts, recommendations and turnkey solutions as to the best way to achieve the results they desire. Consulting with clients can lead to securing freelance work, since clients realize you have the skills and expertise to undertake the task.
• Know the future needs of clients. Clients come with present needs — and future needs. A client may hire you to write a newsletter now, but they'll also consider you for future work if you know what their future needs are and how to fulfill them. The company may be ushering in a new product line, creating a new division within the company, sponsoring a charity event, or creating a website. All of these future events need a freelancer to do promotional writing and freelance work. That's you. Your job is to show clients how you'll address their future needs with solutions that'll increase their profitability and/or productivity. This is usually accomplished with a proposal through which you pitch yourself as the freelancer who has the solutions to undertake the future tasks.
• Use proposals to secure work. Proposals are an inclusive persuasion tool to convince prospects that you can increase their profitability and/or productivity with your freelance services. Proposals specifically show the client how you intend to achieve the desired results, the time and costs involved, and why you and your solutions are the best choices to boost the company's profits.
• Adaptations. Any of your freelance writing services can be adapted for websites, turning a single assignment into two assignments. Get paid to write a press release or brochure, and then get paid again to adapt the copy digitally.
• Add-on services, such as desktop publishing services, marketing consulting, compiling and selling media lists, and project coordinating can help multiply your work and your income.

#Daily Writing Tip :
---------------------
Write Your Own Content Articles
by Donald Blake
Anyone can write an article. But, not everyone can write a quality article that people will want to read and republish on their own website. The guidelines here will help you to improve your writing skills.
1. Write about something that interests you. If you are interested in a topic, you are likely to be knowledgeable in that area and your enthusiasm will come across in your writing. Enthusiasm is infectious and your article will spread.
2. Do not rush at the article like a bull at a gate. Take your time, write it and re-write it. You will be more likely to make mistakes if you hurry and may forget to include something important. You can edit the article afterwards any time you like it is yours. But, you do not want multiple article versions of varying quality being published around the internet, people will notice and it will not do your reputation any good. So once it is published leave it alone unless there is something major that needs to be altered.
3. Make sure that your article is relevant to the topic of your site. It is no good writing an article about gardening if in your resource box you ask people to visit your real estate or mortgage site. You will have established your credentials as a gardener in the article not as a financial advisor. What could you have said in a gardening article that would encourage them to visit your finance site?
4. Make sure that the information is useful as well as relevant. It is no good writing a multitude of articles about the topic of your site if the articles are complete rubbish because there is no useful information in them. People will judge your site and your credibility based on the article they are reading now, not the one you want them to read when they get to your site.
For some authors, who want to save the good stuff for their own visitors, rather than writing quality articles for other webmasters. This idea may be hard to swallow.
5. Write articles of various lengths. Not all webmasters are looking for articles of the same length. One day they may need a small article to fill a space on a page that has a bigger article dominating the page. Another time they may need the big article. If you have articles of different sizes, you increase your chances of being published.
6. Do not write a big long add for your product or site. It is definitely less likely to be published by the article directories. I know I would not publish a blatant add like that. Be discreet. Write well about your subject and people will want to know where your site is so that they can get more of the same. Write a big advertisement and even if you do get it published in an article directory people be wary of your site and webmasters are certainly not going to pick up the article and spread your links around the web for you.
7. Write the kind of article that you yourself would like to read. If you would read it, there is a good chance that others would too. If you think it is rubbish then you really cannot expect others to appreciate it.
8. Be brief. That does not mean that the article has to be short. It means that you should not use two words when one will do. Webmasters are typically very busy. (especially if they write their own articles) Therefore, they do not have the time to wade through a load of twaddle looking for the nuggets of quality information you have hidden in the two-thousand-word article you want him to use on his site and he will not want his visitors to have the same problem. So, say as much as you need to, but do not drag it out. If you do not have much to say then do not say much. If you do have a lot to say, consider splitting the article up into two parts, and publishing them separately or making two completely separate articles.
9. Keep the resource box short. People do not expect to see a job application in the resource box. Again, keep it brief and include your link. Many article directories allow you to insert resource boxes nearly as big as the article. Even if you may, I do not recommend it. It can put people off. When is the last time you read the article, then the huge resource box and then clicked on the link?
10. Most article directories discourage links in the main text and some will not even consider publication of articles with them. This is because links in the article ruin the flow of the article and can make it look like one of those advertisements I mentioned earlier. If it is unavoidable then chance it, but otherwise write the article in such a way as not to absolutely need the links in the main text. That is, after all the reason for the resource box.
11. If you do not speak the language then maybe you should get someone else to write the article for you. Maybe a ghost-writer is called for. There is a whole industry springing up around this side of the business today. I do not mean to be harsh. But, a webmaster is looking for the best quality of article he can get, and generally it will be in his own language. Therefore, he will immediately see the misspellings, grammatical errors and other mistakes are in it, making it unlikely that he will choose it for his site.
12. The most important guideline of all is this. Try hard to make the content original. Do not rehash some old junk that has already been rehashed a dozen times before by many other authors. That will impress no one. There is today a huge variety of article writing software that will do the job for you. However, this software usually takes a private licence article and produces a variety of articles based on that; not very original. Some of them may even fool the robots today. But, what of tomorrow. There is no substitute for the genuine article. With about six billion websites on the internet today, original content is the most sought-after commodity and gets the highest ranks.

Continuing the previous article, Freelance Writers: 14 Tried & True Ways to Make More Money:
8. Do a Freebie: When all else fails, this is a great standby.
As a personal example, I recently decided that I wanted to do some work for a local nonprofit government agency (I've seen some of their material and it's not up to par, and I also have several more ideas that could increase their visibility in the community).
So, I'm currently working on a brochure that I plan to present to the communications manager, whom I happen to know from networking (see article, "Why Every Freelance Writer Should Join a Chamber of Commerce" on InkwellEditorial.blogspot.com).
Now, I'm doing this "freebie" because I know that if I can get my foot in the door, I can get more work from other city agencies.
So, when all else fails, a freebie can be your calling card.
9. Create a Backlog of Material: There are days when I just want to write. I don't want to market, I don't want to do follow up calls, I don't want to do interviews - I just want to write. Sometimes, I have the luxury of giving in to this. I may turn out 5 or 6 articles and come up with ideas for a dozen more and create outlines for those.
This is why I always have a backlog of material. On days when I don't feel like writing, I will market the pieces I've written. The point is to take advantage of whatever mood you're in, as long as it's not throwing in the towel.
NOTE: The following are what you might call cerebral ideas, but you have to get the brain moving before anything else can work, soooooooo:
10. Stop Procrastinating: We all do it - but have you ever stopped to figure out how much it's costing you in real dollars?
When freelancing, time is money, so if you can cut down on the surfing, answering email, talking on the phone - whatever it is that sucks up your time - and churn out one more marketing task a day, think how that can add up over weeks and months and by year's end.
11. Pay for Knowledge: Many times, we get so stuck in our own world that we don't take the time to expand our skill set. And I'm not talking a grave amount of time here.
Eg, how long would it take you to learn how to build a simple website? Learning how to do this can add a whole other revenue stream to your business. I falter on this myself.
I ordered a new software almost two months ago and have yet to open it. I bought the program because it would allow me to add another revenue stream to my business, but I have yet to get around to opening the box.
I tell this story to make a point - if you are a real do-it-yourself, then by all means, e-learning and/or figuring it out yourself might work for you.
HOWEVER, if you are extremely busy and/or a procrastinator, take a class with an instructor. You will get the knowledge you need and are more likely to use it than let it sit on a shelf and collect dust (note to self: open the box!)
12. Create a Dream Life: What do I mean by this? Think where you want to be in 5, 10, 15 years and ask yourself if what you are doing at that very moment is propelling you toward that life.
This has snapped me back in line on hundreds of occasions. When I get unmotivated, lazy, and/or find myself doing something other than what I should be doing during the hours I set aside to devote to my "business," I remember that I want to have the option of retirement at 55, that I want to travel 3 months out of the year, that I want to be debt free in 10 years, etc.
Your goals may be different. But when you make your dreams a priority, not a distant "someday goal" to achieve, your every action will be oriented towards making it happen.
Nothing succeeds like perseverance - there will always be those who are smarter, faster, funnier, wittier - whatever. But, a field you can always compete on is perseverance - most don't have that.
13. Become an Optimist: Although this may sound a little new agey, we really are what we think.
If you start to dwell on how hard freelancing is, how frustrating, how underpaid you are, how many rejections you received - and believe me, I KNOOOOOWWW the feeling - you start to internalize those negative feelings. This stops the natural flow of ideas.
So, by all means, eat that pint of ice cream when yet another client cancels a project, but don't grab a cookie too. Grieve and move on.
I've come to embrace my failures as much as my successes because invariably, I can pinpoint a success on a failure. What I mean is, I can look back and go, wow, if that [bad thing] had never happened, then this [good thing] never would have.
It is absolutely uncanny how life works. Life is a series of yings and yangs. Learning to appreciate this will only make your life easier - on all levels.
14. Do Something Completely Different: And I'm not just talking about projects - I'm talking about life. Try bungee jumping, motorcycle riding, hang gliding - the point is to recognize something you've always wanted to do and finally just do it!
