Job Description:A. TITLE OF ROLE: Manager/Editor (Grade Level 26)
B. WORKGROUP: Editorial Management
C. SUPERVISOR'S TITLE: Management Committee
D. DESCRIPTION OF ROLE: The primary responsibility of this role is the management of the Quality Progress editorial staff, and all operations related to the magazine's editorial content for both hard copy and electronic versions. Also, this role manages editorial operations for other publications and offerings including Six Sigma Forum Magazine, informational newsletters and the Quality News Today newsfeed.
E. SKILLS: Demonstrated work ethic and communication skills; understanding of quality principles, continuous learning, customer focus, and teamwork and partnering skills. Demonstrated capacity for embracing change and learning new technologies. Current and continuing knowledge of the magazine publishing industry, including editorial, design, production, and related electronic technologies is required. Experience with managing budgets is also required. Working knowledge of the quality profession, including trends and philosophies is desirable. Superlative writing, editing, proofreading, and grammatical skills required. Must have demonstrated developmental, management, leadership and analytical skills. In addition, a high degree of professional demeanor is required at all times. Role is highly visible both in and outside of the Society; incumbent must deal with all types of personalities in a publishing, and sometimes politically charged, environment.
F. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or related discipline.
G. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of nine years of progressive editorial experience is required, with at least five years of managerial experience.
H. LIST OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Directs the day-to-day and long-term editorial operations of Quality Progress, including editorial content and competitive roleing. 2. Manages magazine's editorial staff. 3. Accepts and rejects submitted manuscripts based on the input of the Editorial Review Board. 4. Determines and schedules the content of each issue. 5. Writes, reviews, and edits articles. 6. Works with Publisher to identify and implement new editorial content distribution strategies related to electronic formats (e.g. CD-ROM, Internet). 7. Studies reader interests and implements appropriate editorial changes. 8. Ensures all general contact regarding Quality Progress is properly handled. 9. Manages the editorial budget for the magazine and other publications cost centers as requested. 10. Coordinates Quality Progress business and is liaison to the Journal Editors Committee. 11. Arranges contracts with freelance writers and editors; works with graphic designers to arrange contracts with artists to develop cover concepts and photos/illustrations for articles. 12. Participates in setting production schedules for monthly publication of Quality Progress. 13. Coordinates reprint availability of ASQ periodicals 14. Works in collaboration with Knowledge Offerings Senior Manager to manage editorial development process for other offerings including Six Sigma Forum Magazine, newsletters, newsfeed and potential new publications. I. ROLE RELATIONSHIPS: 1. Internal - Moderate contact with Publisher, Knowledge Offerings, Member Access Sales, Production Services and society staff at all levels. 2. External - Moderate contact with members and non-members who submit news items, letters and manuscripts. Moderate to heavy contact with journal editors, Chair of Journal Editors Committee, and the Quality Progress Editorial Review Board. Moderate contact with advertisers, and with news sources in government, industry and other associations and academia.
J. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Planning and scheduling. Responsible for making and coordinating short- and long range plans for content and appearance of Quality Progress. Required to develop, propose, and implement plans for the editorial calendar. 2. Budgeting and forecasting. Responsible for developing and administering the editorial budget. 3. Responsibility for establishing objectives, policies or standards. Creates and implements workgroup deployment plan. Develops and implements editorial policies regarding Quality Progress, including those established and approved by Publications Management Board. Develops policies for consideration by Managing Directors and Publisher in areas of moderate sensitivity. 4. Impact of decisions. Responsible for all decisions about editorial content and appearance of Quality Progress.
K. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs the efforts of five to six persons in the workgroup. Supervises temporary personnel as required.
L. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Management Committee. Functions independently with little supervision.
M. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 1. Work Conditions - Normal office environment. 2. Exposure to Hazards - None.
