We have experienced a growing interest in our Women in the Outdoors column, from women and men, since its inception in 1995. Letters show us that readers enjoy stories and essays about women’s experiences afield. So we are always on the hunt for new tales and new voices. We are looking for personal essays and stories, 1,000 to 3,000 words in length, concerning elk, hunting, wildlife encounters, conservation and land-use issues. We are especially interested in thought-provoking stories and essays: personal narratives that evoke emotion and suggest connections to larger themes or ask (or attempt to answer) questions that touch the human heart.

Field and Stream

Writers are encouraged to submit queries on article ideas. These should be no more than a page, and should include a summary of the idea, including the angle you will hang the story on, and a sense of what makes this piece different from all others on the same or a similar subject. Many queries are turned down because we have no idea what the writer is getting at. Be sure that your letter is absolutely clear. We've found that if you can't sum up the point of the article in a sentence or two, the article doesn't have a point. Pieces that depend on writing style, such as humor, mood, and nostalgia or essays often can't be queried and may be submitted in manuscript form. The same is true of short tips. All submissions to FIELD & STREAM are on an on-spec basis.

Workforce
PAY: $.75 - $1.50/word
Online features should have all the characteristics described above in the "what we want" section. They should be newsy, timely, and people-oriented. They should be geared to a high-level audience, and should cover high-level executives. They should demonstrate how smart, innovative workforce management affects the bottom line. Past features have covered the vice-president of American Standard, the president of a hospital, and the CEO of Exult. They tend to run about 900-1,500 words, a bit shorter than print features.
